Whale Spring Subsistence Harvest

Whale Spring Subsistence Harvest

Joni Ungott, BSSN Community Research Assistant in Gambell, reported that both Savoonga and Gambell have caught whales already this spring. The photo above by Mary Ungott of Gambell shows the 13 boats needed to haul the whale that was caught on April 24th. Edward Ungott acted as striker for the first time this year and killed the whale on the first shot. The whale was 37.5 ft. long and this is the second whale caught in the Spring season. Boat captain was Tyre Ungott with crew members Eddie Ungott, Adrian Ungott, and Leon Antoghane.
