BSSN communities in Alaska and Russia reported significant changes in ice conditions during pilot phase. Olga Gerasimova, PhD, a Russian researcher interviewing harvesters in Chuktoka, notes that “Many people are noticing that the ice is breaking earlier and developing later.”

In Gambell, the largest percentage of observed change was in ice conditions (84%). Preliminary data gathered in BSSN 2 demonstrate that hunters and fishers continue reporting on changes in ice conditions in great detail.
