The village of Nikolskoye is located in the Aleutskiy Region of Russia on Bering Island. Bering Island, at 90 kilometers (56 miles) long and 24 kilometers (15  miles) wide, is the largest of the Commander Islands and is located to the east of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Bering Sea. The formation of what  is now the Aleutskiy Region began in 1888.

Nikolskoye’s population is about 800 people, 300 of them Aleut. Nikolskoye village, the administrative  center, is the region’s only settlement. There are weekly flights between Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (Kamchatka) and Nikolskoye. Nikolskoye has one kindergarten, one school, a district hospital, and a cultural center. Traditional harvest includes fish,  salmon caviar, fur seal, birds and eggs, marine invertebrates, seaweed, and mushrooms.
