Oiled Wildlife Found

November 2012 – BSSN communities of Gambell and Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, reported finding oiled wildlife that included a seal and an auklet with oil on their bellies. The seal in the photo above was caught in Oct. 2012 by Reggie Aningayou, Sr. from Gambell.

Several oiled birds and oil-soaked debris have also been found on the island’s shore this fall. The U.S. Coast Guard has not found any signs of an oil spill and the source remains a mystery. Investigations and oil sample testing continues. In the media:
