June 12, 2012 – Principle Investigator Victoria Gofman and Survey Manager Maryann Fidel met with residents of Savoonga to discuss BSSN which has had a slow start in this village. The survey success depends on building trustworthy relationships with subsistence harvesters. Face-to-face meetings in the communities are the most effective means to achieve this. Sand Point increased survey response rate from 15% to 61%

Lisa Jackson, Alice Kalmakoff and Michelle Grohnholdt, Community Research Assistants in Sand Point, interviewed 80 people in the last three months, increasing this community’s response rate four times. High response rate is important for generating statistically significant data, the type of data that can demonstrate trends. Congratulations to the BSSN team in Sand Point for impressive results!
